Fredericton Recognized for International Efforts

FREDERICTON, NB (June 4, 2012) – The City of Fredericton has been recognized with an Award of Excellence from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) for its contribution to FCM's international programming efforts.

This is the 25th anniversary of FCM's International Program.  Three other Canadian communities were also recognized this past weekend at FCM's 75th Annual Conference and Trade Show held in Saskatoon, SK.  The list of cities recognized includes: Fredericton,  Calgary,  Municipalité régionale de comté des Collines-de-l'Outaouais, Montréal

"Over the past 25 years, FCM and its municipal partners, with support from the Canadian International Development Agency, have built a shining example of effective municipal-federal partnership that delivers results, one that should be a model for our domestic work as well," said FCM President Karen Leibovici.

"To celebrate the 25th anniversary of FCM's international programming, today we have recognized municipalities that have distinguished themselves in terms of the scope of their involvement, the way in which they involved their whole community, the quality of their technical assistance and the most import results they achieved where they matter most, on the ground," added President Karen Leibovici.

Fredericton has been a very strong partner for FCM International, since 1999, and is often cited as an example for its work in Thailand and Vietnam and for its participatory approach on projects related to strategic planning, parks development and recreation.

Fredericton also supported FCM’s reconstruction work in Sri Lanka and our labour rights work in China. The city continues its work with FCM International, this time on a local economic development project with the City of Tiquipaya, Bolivia.

Fredericton’s work produced outstanding and sustainable results in Thailand and Vietnam, where the city piloted the first North-South-South partnership project and coached its Thai partner to provide technical assistance to its Vietnamese neighbour.  The Thai community in Fredericton also got involved, thereby broadening the scope and reach of the city’s projects
